I have been wanting to write a blog post about Carter’s Beach for a while now. Although the beach is not huge, its definitely one of my favourites. The sand is so white and the water is clear blue, making you feel as though you are down south (until you dip your toes into our Nova Scotia ocean anyway, lol!)
Located in Port Mouton, NS, Carter’s Beach is the perfect place to go if you want a quiet place to relax. It is also a great place to go if you are on the hunt for sand dollars.
How to find sand dollars:
- Go during low tide for a better chance at finding sand dollars. This strategy works especially well if you can beat the crowd. Tides are at their ultimate lowest during full and new moon. You can click this link for the area’s tidal charts.
- Often times, sand dollars are buried just under that sand. Shuffle your hands or feet around in the sand to help unbury them.
- Look for a raised or lowered circular shape in the sand.
- Go a day or two after a big storm or hurricane.

Directions:
- Turn at Exit 21 off of Highway 103.
- Turn right onto Lighthouse Route towards Port Mouton.
- Take a slight left onto Central Port Mouton Road.
- Continue straight about 400 meters until you reach the beach parking lot.
Here is a link to Google Maps.
Helpful tips:
- Parking is hard to come by. If you don’t get there early enough, you end up having to park on the side of the road, which is very narrow to begin with. If you have cash on hand, you can pay locals to park on their private property.
- There are no outhouses or change rooms, so make sure you come prepared.
- Check out Trip Advisor here for more information and pictures of the beach.
